What is OCR?
OCR (optical character recognition) turns the pixels of a scanned page or photo into text: it finds lines and words, recognises characters with a model trained per script, and produces text you can search, copy and index. Accuracy depends on resolution (300 dpi is the usual target), contrast, skew and the script — Arabic and Devanagari need their own language models — and the output should be proofread where it matters.

How is a word counted?
A word is an unbroken run of letters, combining marks or digits; apostrophes and hyphens inside a word do not split it. This matches Word’s count for ordinary prose within a percent or two. Numbers count as words; standalone symbols such as &, § or a spaced dash do not, which is one place where the count can differ from a word processor.
Why does the count differ from my word processor?
PDF text is rebuilt from positioned runs, so hyphenation at line ends, headers and footers, page numbers and footnotes are all counted — a word processor may exclude some of them. Select only the body pages to get closer.
Can it count a scanned PDF?
Not directly: a scan has no text. Run OCR PDF first, then count the searchable result.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The file is opened and processed by your browser with WebAssembly and JavaScript; nothing is sent to Mutqan Soft or anyone else. Close the tab and the file is gone. Downloading the result needs a free account — no subscription, no payment.
Can I use it on a password-protected PDF?
Yes, if you know the password: the file list asks for it once and every operation then works on the decrypted pages. The output is saved without a password unless you protect it again.
Technical notes
Unicode-aware tokenisation (`\p{L}\p{M}\p{N}` runs with inner apostrophes and hyphens); sentences end at . ! ? ؟ ।; a short multilingual stop-list keeps the top-words list meaningful.
