What is inside a DOCX or XLSX file?

A .docx, .xlsx or .pptx file is a ZIP package of XML parts defined by ECMA-376 / ISO/IEC 29500 (Office Open XML): document text and styles, worksheets and shared strings, slides and layouts, plus relationships, media and a core-properties part with author, dates and revision metadata. That is why such files can be read, previewed and converted in the browser without Office installed — and why their metadata deserves a look before they are shared.

Frequently asked questions about Excel (XLSX) Viewer

Are formulas recalculated?

No — the values Excel last saved are shown. A workbook written by a program that stores formulas without their cached results shows empty formula cells, and one saved in manual calculation mode with recalculation before saving turned off can show out-of-date values.

How large a sheet can it show?

Up to 2,000 rows × 60 columns per sheet are rendered, and the summary tells you when a sheet was cut. Use Excel to PDF for a printable version of a wider sheet.

Does it show charts?

No. Values, formula results, merges, bold and alignment are rendered; charts, images, conditional formatting and comments are not.

Does it open .xls or .csv?

.xlsx only. For CSV, use CSV to PDF or open it in a spreadsheet; convert .xls to .xlsx in Excel or LibreOffice first.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is opened and processed by your browser with WebAssembly and JavaScript; nothing is sent to Mutqan Soft or anyone else. Close the tab and the file is gone. Downloading the result needs a free account — no subscription, no payment.

Technical notes

exceljs reads the workbook; a display layer converts each cell value by type (rich text, hyperlinks, formulas with cached results, dates as YYYY-MM-DD with the time, or only the time, when the number format has one, percentages) and reads merges from the sheet model. The grid is a plain HTML table with rowSpan/colSpan, row and column headers, and dir="rtl" for right-to-left sheet views.
