PDF to Excel

Runs in browser PDF Conversion

Detects tables from how the text lines up on each page and writes them to an .xlsx — one sheet per table or per page — with numeric cells stored as numbers so you can sum them at once. Well-aligned tables with clear gaps between columns convert cleanly; free-form layouts may need tidying, and the tool tells you when it fell back to writing every line as a row. Scans need OCR PDF first.

What is inside a DOCX or XLSX file?

A .docx, .xlsx or .pptx file is a ZIP package of XML parts defined by ECMA-376 / ISO/IEC 29500 (Office Open XML): document text and styles, worksheets and shared strings, slides and layouts, plus relationships, media and a core-properties part with author, dates and revision metadata. That is why such files can be read, previewed and converted in the browser without Office installed — and why their metadata deserves a look before they are shared.

How to use PDF to Excel

  1. Drop a PDF.
  2. Choose "Detected tables" or "All text", and one sheet per table or per page.
  3. Click "Convert to Excel".
  4. Download the .xlsx.
Tables are found from where the text sits, not from ruling lines: cells split at wide gaps, and lines whose cells start at the same columns become a table.
  1. 1Text piecesThe position of every piece of text
  2. 2LinesPieces grouped by baseline
  3. 3CellsA line splits where a gap is wider than about one font size (at least 5 pt)

Branch: Very small gaps or ruling lines only: one cell per line, so the table comes out in one column

  4. 4TableConsecutive lines whose cells start at the same columns: 2+ rows and columns, and 3 lines or 3 columns

Branch: No table on the page: every line is written as a row

  5. 5.xlsxOne sheet per table or per page; plain figures stored as numbers1,234.50 → 1234.5

A bold first row becomes the header when each table gets its own sheet. Numbers are converted while “Store numbers as numbers” is on.

Frequently asked questions about PDF to Excel

How are tables detected?

The tool reads the position of every piece of text, groups it into lines, splits each line into cells where the gap between two pieces of text is wider than about one font size (at least 5 pt), clearly more than a normal word space, and keeps runs of consecutive lines whose cells start at the same columns. With one sheet per table, a bold first row becomes the header. Nothing is guessed from ruling lines, so tables without visible borders work too.

Numbers come out as text — why?

With "Store numbers as numbers" on, plain figures such as 1,234.50 or (45) become numeric cells; values with units, percentages or mixed text stay as text on purpose. Turn the option off to keep every cell exactly as printed.

My table came out in one column.

That happens when the columns are separated by very small gaps or by ruling lines only. Try "All text, one row per line" to get every line, then split columns in Excel with Text to Columns.

Can it read a scanned table?

Not directly. Run OCR PDF first to create a text layer, then convert the searchable PDF.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is opened and processed by your browser with WebAssembly and JavaScript; nothing is sent to Mutqan Soft or anyone else. Close the tab and the file is gone. Downloading the result needs a free account — no subscription, no payment.

What are the size limits?

Up to 250 MB and 2,000 pages per operation on a desktop browser, 60 MB and 500 pages on a phone, because everything runs in your device’s memory. The tool tells you before it starts if a file is over the limit.

Can I use it on a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password: the file list asks for it once and every operation then works on the decrypted pages. The output is saved without a password unless you protect it again.

Technical notes

Lines are formed from baselines; cells from gaps wider than about one font size; a table is a run of consecutive lines whose cell starts match a growing set of column positions (tolerance ≈ 0.9 × font size), with at least two rows and columns and three lines or three columns to avoid key–value pairs. Cells are assigned to the nearest column to their left. exceljs writes the workbook with column widths from content, numeric conversion via a locale-tolerant parser, and `rightToLeft` sheet views when the content is Arabic.
